Methionine

Methionine is an amino acid that helps build proteins in the body.

It may lower risk of some types of cancer. It might increase symptoms of schizophrenia. 1

Researchers have found a Methionine gene which suppresses HSV-1 in the majority of the population. 2 Further studies highlight Methionine’s role in healing and preventing HSV recurrences. 3

High methionine diets may speed up aging, and increase risk of heart disease, so reconsider this supplement if you do not have a specific medical reason to take it (such as slowing cancer growth). 1

Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine is an amino acid used by the body to produce protein and other molecules such as Tyrosine, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, and Dopamine. 1

It is found in high protein foods such as eggs, dairy, meat, and soy. 1

May be useful for depression and certain skin disorders such as Vitiligo. 1

It exists in two forms — L-phenylalanine and D-phenylalanine. They’re nearly identical but have slightly different molecular structures. 1

Tryptophan

Tryptophan is an amino acid.

Without the proper levels of BH4, Tryptophan can be converted into kynurenine and quinolinic acid, a neurotoxin. 1

Side note: this is also why Quinolones (like Ciprofloxacin) are so dangerous to those with MTHFR.
