A. muciniphila

Akkermansia muciniphila is a probiotic which shows potential in reducing inflammation in many diseases such as Immunodeficiency, HIV, Systemic Lupus, Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis, and Irritable Bowel Disease. It may even have potential in improving cancer treatments. Akkermansia is passed through breast milk in newborns, thus being some of the first bacteria to colonize the digestive tract. 1

It consumes mucin and creates short-chain fatty acids which benefit other healthy bacteria in the gut.

Bc. subtilis

Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming bacteria which is commonly found in soil and other organisms.

It produces surfactant which may be able to inactivate certain lipid-enveloped viruses, such as HSV. 1

It produces protease and amylase, which are essential for protein splitting. 2 This could potentially increase viral activity, though more study is needed. 3

Enterococcus faecalis

Animal research shows that berberine promotes the production of BH4 through interaction with gut bacteria. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium bacteria along with berberine increased BH4 and increased dopamine in a mouse model of Parkinson’s. 1
